The robot vacuum cleaners we are to examine today are steadily occupying leading positions in reviews and sales. People love them for their excellent quality, technical capabilities, and reasonable price.
Both models are produced by the American company iRobot, but they belong to different series. Roomba 690 belongs to the earlier 600 series while Roomba 890 was released later as part of the 800 series model line. Let’s take a closer look at the robots and compare their functions.
Roomba 890 Robot Vacuum with Wi-Fi
The appearance of iRobot Roomba 890 is plain and elegant; it’s round and made in two colors: black and brown. One item weighs 8.4 pounds, its diameter is 13.9 inches and its height is small enough to let the robot clean under the furniture (3.6 inches). The case is covered with a rubber protective layer.
At the top, there are several buttons for mechanical control over the robot, as well as an infrared sensor base for navigation. The robot also has a set of cliff and dirt detect sensors.
At the bottom, the robot has a classic side brush, a silicone double turbo brush, a suction port, and a 550 ml dust bin. This model is equipped with a cyclone dust collector that has a full dust bin indicator. It tells you when to clean the bin.
Speaking about the cleaning system we should mention that the design of the central turbo brush is aimed at collecting both debris and hair. To prevent hair entanglement engineers created the AeroForce Extractors technology. The impermeability of all connections helps achieve and maintain suction power up to 1000 Pa.
Besides, the robot has a high-performance AeroForce filter that can retain up to 99% of allergens and other particles.
iRobot Roomba 890 has two operating modes: automatic and local.
- The automatic mode is used for vast cleaning.
- The local mode is needed to clean special spots or most polluted areas.
Depending on the mode, the robot vacuum cleaner can move randomly, in a zigzag pattern, spirally, around the perimeter, or in circular motions around the obstacles.
The robot cleaner navigates thanks to an advanced navigation system. The above-mentioned sensors allow the device to build an optimal cleaning route, and carry out effective cleaning under furniture, along walls, and in corners. The robot is able to independently recognize the most polluted areas, increases efforts for more thorough cleaning, and overcome barriers up to 2 cm in height. You can limit the cleaning space using a virtual wall. It is a kind of “beacon”, which can close areas of up to three meters.
Also in the virtual wall, there is a “halo” mode, thanks to which the device won’t be able to drive up to the “lighthouse” closer than one and a half meters.
IRobot Roomba 890 uses a powerful 1800 mAh XLife battery. It guarantees 60 minutes of autonomous work and 180 minutes of recharge. Thanks to the battery, the cleaning system and navigation the 890 can vacuum 80 sq. meters in one go.
You can control the cleaner manually via case buttons, remotely through the iRobot HOME mobile app or through Alexa. Unfortunately, there`s no remote controller in the set.
- anti-entanglement AeroForce Extractors
- good collection of hair
- high suction
- full dust bin indicator
- AeroForce HEPA filter
- Dirt Detect function
- virtual wall
- improved XLife battery
- silent work
- iRobot HOME app and Alexa voice control
- affordable price
- lack of remote controller
- rather small dustbin
- insufficient runtime in some cases
Roomba 690 Budget Robot Vacuum
The case is traditionally plastic and of black and gray colors.
In the upper part, there is a carrying handle and three control buttons: start, local mode, installation on the base.
A soft protective bumper with built-in sensors is installed on the front side panel. On the bottom, there are wheels, one side brush, double main electric brush, height sensors.
iRobot Roomba 690 collects any rubbish not only from the hard floor but also from carpets. The side brush is most effective for cleaning the floor along the walls and in the corners, as it is designed to direct dust to the suction port.
The central brush consists of two parts, one of which looks like a roller, and the second is equipped with bristles. They rotate towards each other, which allows the robot to thoroughly clean the space.
The Auto-Adjust Cleaning Head adapts its location for better contact with the surface. The garbage is sent to a 600 ml dust collector, where it is sifted through cyclone AeroVac filters so that the air also stays clean. Suction power up to 600 Pa provides a good debris capture, but it works a little worse on thick pile carpets.
There are only two modes in the device:
- Auto mode when the robot cleans the entire room, passing along the walls and the rest of the space and moves along a self-made route;
- Local mode when cleaning is carried out in a single area. The 690 model moves in a spiral, removing a dirty stain.
Having completed the entire amount of work, it goes to the charge station. A 2130 mAh Li-ion battery recharges for 180 minutes and runs for 60 minutes.
You can control the robot vacuum cleaner using the buttons on the control panel as well as using a smartphone. The robot vacuum cleaner allows you to make a schedule and a cleaning plan. For that, you need to download a special application, connect to a Wi-Fi network and synchronize the robot with a smartphone. This model also supports voice control using Google and Alexa.
The free movement of the vacuum cleaner is provided by a set of “smart” sensors that help it understand the features of the room, identify obstacles on the way, height differences, find the base, respond to the virtual wall limiter. There are also Dirt Detect sensors to determine the degree of contamination of the floor. It goes through contaminated areas repeatedly to better clean them. The robot is equipped with an anti-confusion system, which prevents tangles in wires on the floor, and helps find a way out of “problem” places (legs of chairs, tables).
- smart central dual brush
- Auto-Adjust Head
- good collection of hair
- Dirt Detect function
- virtual wall
- nice navigation system
- Wi-Fi and voice assistants
- affordable price
- insufficient suction for thick carpets
- weak filter
- small dustbin
- weak battery and therefore a small cleaning area
- noisy work
Differences between Roomba 890 and Roomba 690
As we`ve already noted above, our robots belong to different series. Therefore, it is logical that they have several technical differences.
- Firstly, the 690 is slightly lighter and has a smaller diameter. Although the height of both devices is almost the same (3.6 and 3.7 inches), so this difference doesn`t significantly affect the cleaning result.
- Secondly, the 690 has a 50 ml larger dust container. But the dust bin of the 890 robot is equipped with a full bin sensor, which facilitates the maintenance of the robot.
- Thirdly, a significant difference is observed in the strength of absorption. Roomba 890 is almost twice as powerful as its rival (1000 Pa vs. 600 Pa).
- Fourthly, a more powerful model also boasts a more powerful HEPA filter. Roomba 690 has the so-called AeroVac filter that keeps 85% of dust while Roomba 890 is equipped with improved AeroForce filtration that absorbs 99% of particles.
- Fifthly, the 890 works quieter. Tests proved that it gives about 50 dB. The 690 model achieves a 65 dB noise level.
- And finally, the 890 can clear a larger area thanks to a more advanced XLife battery. This difference is especially interesting because the operating time for both vacuum cleaners is the same – 60 minutes.
Which one to choose?
Our comparison shows that although both robots are the best representatives of their series, the more modern model is still ahead of its competitor in a number of significant ways.
For example, even though robots do an excellent job with hair, the 890 has greater suction power and a better filter. It also works quieter and faster.
At the moment, the cost of Roomba 890 is about 500 dollars. The 690 model can be bought at $200 cheaper.
