The struggle between the good and the best has been going on for centuries. We are often lost and cannot choose something worthwhile only because of the fear of miscalculation and missing a better thing.
Funnily enough, the same problem befalls us when choosing anything, even robot vacuum cleaners. For several years now, people have been pleased to use the Roomba 960 robot.
But this year, iRobot introduced the new Roomba i7 model, which immediately captured the attention of the public and received the title of one of the best vacuum cleaners. Customers who are just thinking about the acquisition of a high-tech assistant are at a loss.
Which model should they choose now? Will it suit their requirements? Won`t they overpay for unnecessary functionality? Don`t worry. Let’s examine the presented models together.
The iRobot Roomba 960 has a lot in common with its predecessors. The shape of Roomba 960 is perfectly round.
From the edge to the bottom it has a bevel so that the gadget easily overcomes obstacles. The slight angularity of the upper part of the robot prevents stuck under objects with a small clearance. The problems with passability are excluded due to the robot size (13.8 in x 3.6 in with a weight of 8.4 pounds).
The case is made of black plastic. Along the perimeter, the device has a dark gray border. The top panel is reliably protected by a film resistant to mechanical damage, and a soft springy bumper protects the robot body and furniture.
The top panel has three control buttons, a ceiling camera and an infrared sensor to detect the base and obstacles. The bottom is equipped with wheels, a suction port, a dust collector, a side brush, a main double soft brush, 6 height difference sensors, and a lower camera.
During cleaning, the vacuum chooses one of two operating modes (auto or local). Garbage is picked up by a side brush with a hard wear-resistant bristle. The central brush rollers rotate in the opposite direction and catch debris.
Airflow draws dirt into the 600 ml dust collector, and fine litter remains on the HEPA filter.
Roomba 960 inherited the second generation of the Dirt Detect system from its predecessors, which determines the degree of contamination of the location.
It also uses cameras for room mapping and anti-drop sensors. All detectors work simultaneously and along with the iAdapt 2.0 and vSLAM technologies send the signals to promote navigation. For the robot not to enter premises where the cleaning isn`t necessary, its “field of activity” is limited by a virtual wall. The gadget won`t be able to overcome it.
Besides the mechanical control, there is also a smartphone app through which you can start and stop the cleaning process, configure the robot to work on a schedule, determine its location, as well as find out the current state of the machine. Roomba 960 is compatible with Google and Alexa voice assistants.
The robot has a Li-ion battery with a capacity of 2130 mAh, which gives you up to 80 minutes of running with three hours of charging time.
The combination of anti-entanglement brushes, 900 Pa suction, navigation, and cleaning modes makes Roomba 960 an effective vacuum suitable for all floor types. It cleans the most hard-to-reach places, collects the most complicated pollution (such as hair), refreshes the air, and can vacuum quite large territory.

Roomba i7 was presented in July 2019. This iRobot representative has a wide range of interesting and useful technologies that greatly help in cleaning.
Speaking about the appearance and parts of the robot we should say that they are very similar to the appearance and parts of Roomba 960.
iRobot Roomba i7 looks like a black circle with some grey elements and buttons on the top panel.
Its width is 13.3 inches, height is 3.6 inches and weight is 7.3 pounds. At the bottom, it has a side brush and an improved double turbo brush for better debris collection.
All the debris gets into the small washable dust bin with a volume of 400 ml. If you have Roomba i7+ modification, it supports an innovative Automatic Dirt Disposal technology. That means that the robot empties its dust collector on the charging station by emitting the dirt into a special bag.
This modification of iRobot, in comparison with earlier models, has a large suction power (1700 pa) and can work on any coatings. A well-thought-out system of movement and brushes allows the vacuum cleaner to easily overcome obstacles up to 2 cm in height. So the combination of these features helps perfectly absorb dust, garbage, and animal hair.
The vacuum can alter its suction depending on the chosen mode: automatic – full cleaning of the constructed route; local – in places with heavy pollution; along the walls – movement around the perimeter of the room and into the corners.
If the Dirt Detect sensors find extra polluted areas, Roomba i7 cleans them especially carefully. During the carpet vacuuming, it activates the Carpet Boost mode.
A feature of i7 is a high-quality three-stage filtration system. Due to this, the device cleans the air passing it through the filters. At the same time, its powerful HEPA filter can neutralize allergic particles produced by animals.
The robot also has an advanced navigation system provided by iAdapt 3.0 and vSLAM technologies. They allow the robot to avoid obstacles or hitting the furniture. For building and keeping a detailed map the i7 uses Imprint Smart Mapping. Later the robot will systematically use this map during every cleaning. It also remembers the names of the rooms.
The set includes a special limiter that emits an infrared ray invisible for the human eye. But the robot sees it and can`t cross this border. There is also another mode that makes a circle restrictive zone.
You can monitor your device and set the orders through the iRobot HOME app or devices compatible with Alexa and Google Assistants.
The robot has just the same battery capacity of 3300 mAh. It can work for 75 minutes and recharges for 3 hours.

Differences between Roomba 960 and Roomba i7
When comparing the characteristics of the two robots, we found out several differences.
- Roomba 960 surpasses its competitor in terms of dust collector and battery power. It has a 600 ml dust collector while the i7 has only 400 ml. But note that if you choose the 7+ model with the Dist Disposal function, then the latter robot certainly wins.
- Also, the 960 robot can work slightly longer compared to the i7.
If we are talking about the characteristics that represent Roomba i7 in a more favorable light, then here they are.
- Firstly, although both models are similar in shape and color, they have different dimensions. Roomba i7 is slightly lighter and narrower than Roomba 960, which may affect maneuverability.
- Secondly, the i7 model is twice as powerful as its opponent (1700 Pa vs 900 Pa).
- Thirdly, when cleaning carpets, it activates the Carpet Boost technology, which isn`t presented in the 960.
- Fourth, although both robots use iAdapt technology for navigation, Roomba i7 uses the advanced variation (iAdapt 3.0 vs iAdapt 2.0), as well as Imprint Smart Mapping.
- And finally, Roomba i7 is much quieter than its predecessor.
Which one to choose?
Our comparison showed that although these vacuum cleaners are similar in many respects, in the essence they are still different.
Roomba 960 is an excellent multi-functional robot that is suitable for any need and can do its job perfectly. At the same time, its price is quite low, that`s why the 960 is affordable for everyone.
Roomba i7, on the contrary, is a VIP class device, and its price of $ 1,000 is not affordable for everyone. It has slightly improved characteristics compared to the first model as well as a number of unique innovations. This robot will be a justifiable purchase for those who need more performance and the greatest autonomy of the robot vacuum cleaner.
