Today we`re bringing to your attention a comparative review on two popular models of robot vacuum cleaners from the American company iRobot – Roomba 980 and Roomba i7. Both devices were released relatively recently and have already received many positive comments. During this article, we`re to consider their characteristics, highlight the strengths and weaknesses as well as similarities and differences.

Roomba 980

Roomba 980 is one of the most popular models which represents several modernizations and improvements of the characteristics of previous Roomba vacuum cleaners.

The design of iRobot Roomba 980 is quite classic and concise, so it perfectly fits into any interior.

The height of the model is 3.6 inches, the diameter is 13.8 inches and the weight is 8.7 pounds. The elaborate size and design guarantee easy passing without any problems. And in case of bumps, the black round vacuum cleaner has a rubber edge pad that protects the furniture and the body itself from damage.

The number of buttons on the top is minimized because the management of all functions is performed via a smartphone app or voice assistants such as Goggle and Alexa.

Under the vacuum cleaner, you will find wheels, a side brush, a double rubber roller for garbage collection, and a garbage container. A side brush sweeps dirt and dust from the corners and along the walls, and two rubber brushes that move towards each other direct the debris into the vacuum.

In the end, the dirt is sucked up into the 600 ml container with the power up to 1700 Pa. Then the air passes through a HEPA filter that holds particles up to 1 micron in size and comes out clean.

The robot navigates with the variety of sensors located on the case of the vacuum cleaner, inside it and at its bottom.

Plus, on the upper part of the case, the vacuum cleaner has a video camera that helps it scan the space around and make a visual map of the cleaned room.

iRobot Roomba 980 also has in its arsenal height sensors located on the lower plane of the case, they control the surface, and if the vacuum cleaner notices steps or something like that, it`ll stop and move in another direction. Besides, it also copes with small elevations up to 2 cm and overcomes thresholds, carpets, and other floor unevenness.

The system works very efficiently, Roomba will never fall from the steps or get stuck. And two additional virtual walls help limit the cleaning area.

The quality of cleaning of the 980 is significantly superior to many other models as engineers elaborated a new moving system. Now the robot doesn`t go in a spiral or even randomly, but it moves along parallel paths avoiding obstacles that arise. This technology is called vSLAM IROBOT. You can choose between the auto and the local cleaning modes.

The iAdapt 2.0 technology also helps the vacuum accurately determine the type of cover. When passing from parquet to carpet, the vacuum cleaner will determine the change and start the Carpet Boost function, which increases the suction power, providing better cleaning. It also uses the Dirt Detect sensors to find contamination and put more effort into its cleaning.

Roomba 980 can vacuum your apartment for 120 minutes thanks to the powerful 3300 mAh Li-ion battery. When it runs out of battery charge, it`ll stop cleaning, fill up the charge on the charging base and continue working from the place where it was interrupted. The recharging will take about 2 hours.

This robot is suitable for owners of any home types from a small city apartment to a multi-story country mansion. The device works well with all floorings, thoroughly cleans carpets, collects hair, asepticizes the air, and maintains daily cleanliness.
The pros of the robot are:
  • good maneuverability
  • anti-entanglement rollers
  • full dust bin indicator
  • high suction
  • HEPA filter
  • iAdapt 2.0 and vSLAM navigation
  • Dirt Detect
  • Carpet Boost
  • wide set of sensors
  • two virtual walls
  • iRobot HOME app and voice control
  • powerful battery
The cons of the robot are:
  • rather small dustbin
  • noisy work
  • high price

Roomba i7

At first glance, Roomba i7 looks like any other iRobot cleaner, but this model has been redone and improved in many ways.

Outside, the vacuum cleaner isn`t different from all other iRobot models – it is the same black and round with a protective shockproof coating. Its width is 13.3 inches, height is 3.6 inches and weight is 7.3 pounds. The dimensions and ability to overpass 2 cm elevations give the robot nice passability.

This vacuum cleaner is equipped with a standard side brush and a new cleaning head with two rubber brushes suitable for all surfaces. Brushes have different shapes for better contact with any surface and debris.

Plus, the new suction system is more powerful than many previous versions of Roomba. The robot can alter the suction depending on the cleaning mode and type of the surface. At the maximum mode and Carpet Boost, it has 1700 Pa.

Inside the package, in addition to brushes and a replaceable HEPA filter, you can also find a “virtual wall” that prevents the robot from working in undesirable places. You place this accessory so that the robot only cleans a certain perimeter of your house, and simply ignores the restricted area.

Built-in cameras and sensors provide intelligent orientation capabilities that allow the robot to study the layout of each room on each floor of the house. It scans the dwelling and remembers the maps of each room thanks to the Imprint Smart Mapping technology.

The iAdapt 3.0 and vSLAM also allow the robot to navigate and avoid obstacles or hitting the furniture. Dirt Detect and cliff sensors help spot the most complicated pollution and dangerous drops like stairs.

Most vacuum cleaners, as a rule, have a container capacity of 0.5 to 0.7 liters, which is too small for a standard apartment, especially if you have a long-haired pet.

The dust collector of this model has a volume of 0.4 L, which forces you to empty the dust bin at least once during each cleaning cycle.

However, iRobot managed to develop an improved version of the model called Roomba i7 +, which cleans itself! Its charging base is now actually complemented by the Automatic Dirt Disposal system.

Whenever Roomba i7 + detects that the container is full, it returns to its base and empties it into the bag using the built-in vacuum system. The bag is 30 times greater than the capacity of the robot.

The robot has a 3300 mAh battery that gives the vacuum energy for 75 minutes of work. Recharging lasts for 3 hours.

Among other things, Roomba i7 is also compatible with voice control via Alexa or Google Assistant. For those who don`t have a smart speaker, there is always an excellent official iRobot application, thanks to which you have full control over your robot. You can program the cleaning of a room or the whole house thanks to an intelligent mapping system.

Roomba i7 is a truly full-fledged robot in all aspects. Its technical equipment, navigation systems, and three-stage cleaning make it an excellent choice for any user. The only obstacle to buying this robot vacuum cleaner is the price, which can be too high for an average budget.
The pros of the robot are:
  • effective brush-rollers
  • high suction
  • adaptation to any surface
  • HEPA filter
  • Automatic Dirt Disposal (i7+ model)
  • Dirt Detect function
  • Carpet Boost function
  • several cleaning modes
  • virtual wall
  • nice navigation
  • Imprint Smart Mapping
  • Wi-Fi and voice assistants
  • silent work
The cons of the robot are:
  • small dustbin
  • weak battery
  • high price

Differences between Roomba 980 and Roomba i7

Roomba 980 and Roomba i7 are very similar in most respects. They have the same brushes, equally powerful suction power and a three-stage cleaning system. Both robots carry out air purification and execute voice commands as well as mobile app schedule.

If we talk about the differences, then there are not many of them at all and in the vast majority of cases, they are not significant.

  • So, the first difference is battery power. The 980 runs for 120 minutes or two hours without recharging. The i7, unfortunately, has a much worse capacity – a little over an hour (75 minutes).
  • The next difference is observed in spatial orientation systems. Both vacuum cleaners use the same technologies. However, the i7 is equipped with an improved version of the iAdapt (the third generation) and also has the Imprint Smart Mapping, which its opponent does not have.
  • And finally, Roomba 980 and Roomba i7 have different dust collectors and even bin cleaning methods. If we are talking about the basic i7 model, then its dust collector is 200 ml smaller than the dust collector of the 980. However, if we compare Roomba 980 and Roomba i7+, then the last robot that`s equipped with a self-cleaning system undoubtedly wins the comparison.

Which one to choose?

So, in conclusion, we`d like to say that both robot vacuum cleaners are equally good in all respects.

Although the i7 is a more modern model, it has a number of innovations (for example, Smart Mapping and dust bin self-cleaning in the i7+), the Roomba 980 is no worse, and sometimes even better than its competitor.

Therefore, we would advise you to opt for the 980 model, since for all its high functionality, it has a very reasonable price.

Roomba i7, unfortunately, will cost you much more, although this overpayment won`t bring practical benefits. But if you`d like to have the newest robot possible, then better the advanced “plus” configuration.
